Beth Bauer In December 2007, Beth Bauer, Director of Spanish Studies at Brown University, visited the Clinic and the community, bringing supplies and medicines donated by the Brown Sustainable Community Development project. |
Kati Johnston, Maddie Whalen, Reina Chamberlain, Megan Attridge, Rebeka Gobeze and Lucia Dong Wang For the fall semester 2007, these exchange students from PUCMM had part of their Community Health class at the clinic and then donated their time to work in Clinic, run the Young Women’s Club, visit homes with the Health Councelors and the Internal Medicine group and teach English and reading & writing in the local school. In November, Yemi Erku joined them. |
Jesse Kurn In October, 2007, Jesse Kurn visited the Clinic for less than a week. But in that time, he assisted the Internal Medicine Group with their home visits, worked with the PUCMM students, prepared the Dental storage cabinet, added equipment to our baseball team, donated a volleyball set and made and put up a basketball net in Los Pajones. |
Sara Baird During the summer of 2005, Sara Baird, a recent graduate of Brown University and continuing medical student volunteered to help our community. Sara was responsible for preparing and distributing the clothing received from Centura Parc, FL residents and assisted with our "charlas.” |
Wendy Beyer Our second Resident from the Family Practice Group, Wendy Beyer, M.D., spent the month of March 2006 with us. Dr. Beyer brought urine test strips which allowed us to do urine analysis in the Clinic. She prepared packages of blankets, ointments, medicines and supplies that all new mothers should have in their homes. She delivered these packages to our new moms, reviewed their living conditions and answered questions for mom regarding the proper care of their newborn. Dr. Beyer also identified and prepared the “fast moving medicines” and set up an inventory for each consult room. |
Ignacio Inoa Ignacio Inoa, M.D., a gynocologist at Clinica Santiago Apostol, visited our Clinic in December, 2005 and provided check-ups to our pregnant women. He returned in June, 2006 to take Pap samples in our Clinic. |
David Margolius From mid-June through mid-July, 2006, we hosted David Margolius. David was a perfect fit in our team, filling in for our nurse who was out for surgery, taking the vital statistics and preparing our patients for their consultation. After a full day of working in Clinic, David went out to the communities of Los Pinos, Los Pajones and Arenoso to verify and update the census information garnered in 2004. |
Brad "Carlos" Boehringer As a nursing student in 2005, Brad "Carlos" Boehringer spent two weeks working in the Clinic and measuring the students at the school for height and weight. At the end of April, 2006, "Carlos", now a working nurse, returned with his mother Anne who is the manager of a laboratory in Philadelphia, PA. Ann assisted us in organizing our lab and identifying our needs. Brad gave a class to our staff on first aid. |
Chris Carpenter & Lisa Dickey Chris Carpenter, M.D. and Lisa Dickey, M.P.H. spent early August, 2006 with us after they had spent two weeks holding clinics with the USM Nurses. Chris is a pediatric resident with the University of California at San Francisco and brought our fledgling well-baby care program to the forefront and taught our physician to continue the process. Now, every Friday, children under two years old are examined before they receive their vaccines.

Lisa, who has extensive experience in health education to communities, gave a “charla” on Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B after an outbreak of Hepatitis A occurred in La Tinajita. Her talk proved highly beneficial as the number of new cases has dropped to zero. |
Ed Cheung Ed Cheung, also an exchange student in Santiago, introduced the Clinic to Marissa Bucci and Candice Fletcher. He is the reason that we accomplished so much during the fall of 2006, working in the Clinic and in the community every week of the semester.
Ed returned for two weeks in August 2007. During the day, he assisted in the Clinic and in the afternoons he and volunteers from the Young Women's Club distributed parasite medicine to the community. He even found time for a little surfing off the north coast. |
Kai Morrison & Leah Morrison In January, 2006, Brown University Junior, Kai Morrison and her sister, Leah, spent three weeks working in our community and seeing our Clinic in action. Kai and Leah gave 3-day workshops to the young women of the community focusing on self-esteem, changes in their bodies, pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. During their final week, they applied fluoride treatments to the children in the local school. |
Candice Fletcher Candice Fletcher spent much of her spare time as an exchange student in Santiago working in our Clinic and our community assisting with census, Dengue Campaign, vaccination campaign for Rubeola and leading our Young Women's Club.
Candice returned with her godmother, Dawn Mixon, to help with height & weight of the school children, HIV surveys, Young Women's Club and a home visit to a new Mom. Not bad for three days work! |
Heidi McCarthy In early 2005, Heidi McCarthy worked in the Clinic and visited the school with "Carlos" measuring the students for height and weight. |
Marissa Bucci Marissa Bucci spent much of her spare time as an exchange student in Santiago working in our Clinic and our community assisting with census, Dengue Campaign, vaccination campaign for Rubeola and leading our Young Women's Club. |
Madhavi Shah In October, 2005, our first Resident from the Brown Medical School, Madhavi Shah, M.D., worked in our Clinic. Dr. Shah worked with our physician, Dra. Quinones, and allowed us to provide more consults to our community. Dr. Shah also prepared and presented a "charla" on Nutrition for Pregnant Women. |
Kristen Lewis Kristen Lewis, an exchange student in Santiago visited our Clinic whenever her schedule allowed. She worked on census updates and the Young Girls Club activities. |
Barbara Squeri During September 2006, Barbara Squeri, RN, left New York City to spend the month at Pequeños Pasitos. She worked in the Clinic and assisted with updates to the census. |
Isabel Duran In June, 2006, Isabel Duran and her daughter, Alison Candelario, from Santiago, assisted in the Clinic, organized our emergency room and helped us prepare for Pap Smear Day. |
Sue Cote Sue Cote led a team of dental hygienists, who provided our community children under 14 years old with fluoride treatments during the first week of their visit in July, 2006. At these treatments, they identified candidates for tooth sealing treatment. Appointments were given to children who had some adult teeth that were not victim to caries. The following week 19 children received 117 tooth sealant treatments.

Rory Olson Rory Olson used his experience in Africa for our census, conducted during November and December of 2004. The census provides information of every member of every house and a map of the community.

Nelly Peña and Miguelina Ramirez In July, 2006, Nelly Peña and Miguelina Ramirez, pre-school teachers in Santiago, provided our children aged 3, 4 and 5 with a day of pre-school |
Tom Drew At the end of November 2007, Tom Drew, M.D., from the Rhode Island Cardiology Center spent a day taking and reading EKG's from our high risk cardiology patients and reviewed and updated their therapy. |
Miguel Western Miguel Western, former Deputy Warden of the New York City Prison System, prepared the Residence for use, completed the landscaping and a thousand "handyman" tasks. |
Joanna Brown Joanna Brown, M.D. spent the first two weeks of January working in the clinic, visiting our community, hosting visitors, leading the Young Women's Club and lending a hand for Pap Smear day. |
Susan Andrews Susan Andrews, R.N. donated a week of her time to work in the clinic, visit homes in the community and lead the Young Women's Club.
In April 2007, Susan Andrews, R.N. returned for two weeks of more clinic work, home visits and gave educational talks to the women of our community. She came loaded with gifts for the friends that she had made in the community. Rosendo's family all have new sneakers!

Jennifer Rasmussen, Candace Shanks, Bronwen Withorn White and Katie Klutts Exchange students Jennifer Rasmussen, Candace Shanks, Bronwen Withorn White and Katie Klutts completed the parasite campaign with Waldo and lead the Young Women's Club each week until they left in April 2007.
In May 2007, Katie Klutts returned for six weeks. After the Health Committee established the positions of Health Counselors, Katie interviewed candidates, selected three counselors and trained them to visit the homes of our communities, identifying and correcting health hazards and referring cases to the Clinic for vaccines or medical care. Jordan Shapiro and Laura Bonacore Jordan Shapiro, R.N. and Laura Bonacore, R.N. came with a few clothes and their bags full of supplies for the clinic, including a defibrillator. Tirelessly, they worked in the clinic, made home visits and gave a first aid class to our staff. Laura presented educational talks to the women of our community and our Young Women's Club and Jordan instituted educational talks to the men at the baseball field at night. They both cared for Marleni and Yogeiry with Somaz. |
Jessica Buckley & Noah Wasserman For the month of June 2007, Jessica Buckley, M.D., a pediatric resident at the University of California San Francisco, and her husband, Noah Wasserman, a specialist in environmental sciences, helped the Foundation prepare a plan for analyzing the water of the community. Jessica cared for our young patients in the Clinic and visited new moms in their homes. Noah put his studies to work, helping to build the first smokeless, wood burning stove in our community. |
Juan Carlos Molina (John) Juan Carlos Molina spent 8 weeks during June and July 2007 becoming integrated into our communities. He started by visiting every house to ask what their health concerns are, providing the Foundation with a new perspective. He started a soccer game every Friday night which quickly became every night. But his REAL tasks were to assist in the analysis of the water and to build "smokeless" wood-burning stoves. He completed nine. |
Jenny Humphrey Jenny Humphrey spent 7 weeks in June and July 2007. Jenny continued the Miracle with Sterling Sanchez. In addition, she was responsible for the Young Women's Club every Friday, assisted with English classes and assisted with the water analysis. |
Talia Firestein Talia Firestein spent 7 weeks in June and July 2007. She led English classes for primary, 1st and 2nd graders three times per week. She expanded her classes to teach the more advanced students. She was responsible for the Young Women's Club every Friday and she assisted with the water analysis. |
Josh Keegan Josh Keegan spent six weeks in June and July 2007 working on the water analysis, painting the Clinic and assisted building "smokeless" stoves and with the soccer league. |
Solmaz Behtash During her three weeks in May 2007, Solmaz Behtash, D.O. worked in the clinic, prepared and presented educational talks to the women of our community and made home visits to new mothers and invalids, including a visit to Marleni and Yogeiry Martinez. Solmaz, Laura and Jordan received the approval of their father to care for Marleni and Yogeiry at the Residence from sun up to sun down. pound and was walking on her own. |
Jessica Fairley Jessica Fairley, M.D. volunteered for over two weeks in April 2007, providing pediatric care to our newborns, working in the clinic, presenting educational talks to the women of our community and visiting homes. She was joined for a week by her sister, Eileen, who also assisted with the talks and administrative work in the clinic. |
Dr. Jomy Abreu Our Dental program, already jump-started by Sue Cote, took on a more permanent posture with the assistance of Dr. Jomy Abreu. Dr. Abreu began donating his time in August after meeting with Susan to discuss the best methods for continuing dental care for our community. He has volunteered one day each week. |
Kristin Lewis, RN and Norma-Jean Simon Kristin and Norma-Jean spent their New Year in El Llano, living with a host family, working in the clinic, dressing wounds and providing anti-parasite medicine to everyone in our 5 communities. They also lent a hand to the Young Women’s Club and the BSCD students.

They instituted the Brown Sustainable Community Development project and published applications for interested students to help.
For three weeks in January, Juan Carlos, Ed, 12 other students and Linda Rexford, MD moved to Arenoso, Dominican Republic and instituted programs that we all hope will be sustained for years to come. During their visit, they were joined by Timothy Empkie, MD, who served as their advisor on the project, and Lilly S, who documented the project.
The students lived in houses in the community, met each morning at the gazebo they painted and began work. The programs included exercise & nutrition, hypertension & diabetes, education, respiratory health, women’s empowerment and environmental heath.
Their work resulted in the institution of a volleyball league, women’s clubs in three communities, ‘English as a Second Language’ classes, painted community trash cans and trash clean -up, the painted gazebo, child-to-child classes, a fashion show by the Young Women’s Club, computer training classes, SODIS water purification demonstrations, blood pressure and blood sugar check-ups with referrals to the clinic and 8 smokeless wood-burning stoves.

Ed Cheung and Juan Carlos Molina returned with the Sustainable Community Development Project in March of 2008 and in the summer of 2008.
For Summer 2008, the Sustainable Community Development Project included Emily Atwood, Emma Bainbridge, Carolyn Choung, Andrea Dillon, Sophie Fuchs, David Harmon, David Horn, Daniel Hyman, Kirkland Krains, Kayleigh Rogers-Torres, David Segar, Mansi Shah, Kona, Valerie Sherry, Rachel Simon and Kristen Sylvester.
Their main project was summer camp for children in El Llano and Tinajita for five weeks. Other projects included a hand washing station in the local school, construction of smokeless stoves, initiation of home gardens, English classes, sex education discussions, boys club, young women’s club and SODIS and nutrition education.
