What We Do

A Mother's Wish Foundation - Operating Pequenos Pasitos, a clinic and community center outside of Santiago, Domincan Republic.

THE SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

Mission

To empower youth to become future leaders of their own communities

by improving local health care, education and economic opportunities.

Vision

Through collaboration with community leaders and established partner organizations, we seek to strengthen communities by providing access to local health care and educational institutions.  In addition, we hope to expand the reach of our project by acting as a resource in the development of economic opportunities to empower community members to initiate change.

Project History and Overview

Founded in August of 2007 by John Molina and Edward Cheung, the Sustainable Community Development Project (SCDP) works to expand the efforts of the A Mother’s Wish Foundation and its clinic Pequeños Pasitos.   Since October of last year, the project has raised over $34,000 and lead more than forty Brown University undergraduate students, two faculty members and five medical students on trips to the five rural communities in the Santiago Province of the Dominican Republic where we work.   With the support of donors and volunteers various community initiated projects have been implemented which include:

· construction of over 20 smoke-less stoves

· development of a cheap water purification system

· literacy campaign and sex education classes

· hypertension and diabetes campaigns

· community gardens

· women’s empowerment initiatives

· boys club to complement an existing girls club

· sports leagues and a Haitian soccer team

· English and computer courses to provide economic opportunities

· summer camp for over 110 children ages 5-13
