SMOKELESS STOVES— Preventing Respiratory Illnesses The Situation before A Mother’s Wish Almost every house has a separate structure with an open wood-burning stove. Many times during cold weather the entire family can be found in the kitchen, breathing in the smoke fumes. This has had a direct impact on the inordinately high number of respiratory illnesses in the community. Our Solution Through the use of our volunteers, the Foundation has begun a project of installing “smokeless wood-burning stoves in each kitchen. The Foundation provides the clay molded insert and the resident provides all other materials necessary, including labor. The Cost This project is expected to continue over the next few years, based on volunteer availability. Each stove costs the Foundation between US$40 and US$115.
